UN failing to represent Africa: Zuma

first_img25 September 2012South African President Jacob Zuma has raised concerns about what he described as the “undemocratic and unrepresentative” nature of the UN Security Council, saying this would lead to the council’s decisions coming under attack for lack of legitimacy.Addressing the UN General Assembly in New York on Monday, Zuma said it was “common cause that the current configuration of the council is unfair. It does not reflect the contemporary geo-political realities, especially with respect to Africa.”Speaking at a session that focused on the rule of law at national and international level, Zuma criticised the UN for failing to ensure that Africa had enough representation on issues on international peace and security. The African continent was both generally under-represented and specifically unrepresented in the permanent category of the UN Security Council (UNSC), he said.“Adherence to the international rule of law will continue to elude us as long as the organ with the primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security is unrepresentative and undemocratic.”He said the assembly needed to ask whether the content of the decisions of the UNSC were fair.“Over the past year we have seen both inspiring improvements and spectacular disappointments in the promotion of the rule of law through the council’s work,” Zuma said.He added that the adoption of Resolution 1989, “bringing the Al Qaida regime closer to human rights” and due process standards was a noteworthy illustration of the council’s willingness to adhere to the rule of law.The UN had been severely criticised for lack of due process in the listing and delisting of individuals. The resolution was an improvement in that it provided individuals with recourse to challenge unfounded listings.“However, as we noted during the Security Council’s debate on the rule of law in January 2012, there is a need to ensure greater accountability for actions taken in the name of the Security Council.”Africa would continue to encourage the organs of the United Nations, including the council, to make greater use of the International Court of Justice, the principal judicial organ of the United Nations, by making requests for advisory opinions when confronted with complex legal questions. The continent was also of the view that while exerting efforts to promote the rule of law at the national level, including the promotion of accountability mechanisms, equal attention also had to be paid to the rule of law at international level.“If not, the United Nations runs the risk of being accused of double standards and hypocrisy,” Zuma said.Source: SANews.gov.zalast_img read more

Apple Faces App Review Backlog After Developer Center Breach

first_imgdan rowinski Related Posts Tags:#app development#Apple#iOS 7 Why IoT Apps are Eating Device Interfaces As Apple plows towards the release of the next iPhone, it is working with developers to get their apps ready for the next version of its mobile operating system, iOS 7. But Apple hit a major hiccup in the middle of The Summer Of iOS 7 and has had a big hit on developers.Apple’s developer center for iOS was hacked by a “security researcher” a little more than a week ago. The researcher, Ibrahim Balic, insisted that he was just probing the developer center for bugs he could then report back to Apple, but he also may have been able to access the personal information of 100,000 iOS developers. His research, or hack, has had consequences larger than Balic probably intended. For most of the last week, iOS developers did not have access to the tools they needed to build apps for the iPhone and iPad. The loss of access to the developer center for a critical week in the middle of summer was a blow for developers that already have a lot to digest with Apple’s new operating system version. But it also appears that Apple’s app reviewers are getting bogged down by the crash of the developer center. One developer, who asked not to be identified, said they received a letter from Apple saying that the app it submitted for review would require additional time. The letter stated:“We are currently reviewing an app that you submitted for inclusion on the App Store, and want to let you know that the review process will require additional time. We apologize for the delay and will provide you with an update on the status of your app as soon as possible.” A conversation with one other developer revealed that they also had received similar letters from Apple. The developer said that it had never received a letter like that from Apple before in submissions to Apple for its apps and updates. On one hand, it is perfectly reasonable for Apple to tell a developer it needs more time. Especially considering the issues the company is dealing with concerning the iOS developer center. On the other hand, this is fairly unusual behavior for Apple’s app reviewers who are normally able to turn an app review in anywhere between one to three days. The developer said that it was six days from the time of submission until it got the notice from Apple requesting additional time for review. It has since between another five days and the developer’s app still has not been approved. In addition to the app approval delays, the downtime for the iOS developer center meant that app publishers were without the certifications and provisioning profiles needed to add functionality to their apps and publish them to the App Store. Those capabilities were fixed when the developer center came back online earlier this week and Apple released iOS 7 beta 4 for developers. The iOS developer forums, technical support, Xcode Automatic Configuration and videos continue to be unavailable. That means that iOS developers currently have no official avenues of support from Apple or the iOS community currently. Developers are likely flocking to the regular destinations for coder communities like GitHub, StackOverflow, the App Developers Alliance and Code Project can be consulted.center_img The Rise and Rise of Mobile Payment Technology What it Takes to Build a Highly Secure FinTech … Role of Mobile App Analytics In-App Engagementlast_img read more

How To Cure Yourself of a Negative Mindset

first_imgTo cure yourself of a negative mindset, for the next 30 days, follow these rules.Turn off your television. Don’t watch any television at all. But especially don’t watch any news. Don’t even have the news on as background noise while you are working. YouTube is sometimes television. Turn that off too.Turn off your radio. Don’t listen to any news on the radio, and don’t even listen to something you believe to be innocuous, like CNBC. Listen to something positive and productive like an audio program instead.Don’t read the newspaper. Don’t read the news online either. Especially don’t read provocative news sites like the Drudge Report or Politico. Don’t allow anything negative to seep through over the web.Don’t read anything on social media. That sounds crazy, doesn’t it? This one is tough. But you know your Facebook feed is full of people on both side of every political, societal, and cultural issue. You know you are going to get baited and you are going to get hooked. You can still broadcast using some tool like Buffer. Just don’t consume anything.Stay away from negative friends, family, and co-workers. There are some people in your life that are completely and totally negative. They are carriers. They spread the disease that is a negative mindset. You are going to have to avoid them. Not forever. Just long enough that you build up an immunity to virus.Instead of doing anything listed above, do this:Read great works that build a positive psychology. Read Stephen Covey. Read Anthony Robbins. Read Brian Tracy. Read Zig Ziglar. Read Les Brown. Read Napoleon Hill. Read Earl Nightingale. Read Elbert Hubbard. Read James Allen.Listen to audio programs by the group of people listed above. Listen to positive psychology audio programs while you are working out in the morning. Listen while you are driving to and from work. Listen while you are in the shower, grocery shopping, or doing chores around the house.Write a single entry in a gratitude journal every day upon waking. You have a lot to be grateful for, even if you sometimes don’t remember this fact. If you are really going to be aggressive about ridding yourself of negativity and adopting a positive personal psychology, do this twice a day.Increase your awareness of the infected. Over this 30 days, notice the language and the ideas of the negative people you come in contact with. Pay attention to what they say, and try to discover the fear that lives behind their negative mindset. As you notice their negativity, you will become aware of the infections that you have picked up. You will also come to realize just how negative are your thoughts and beliefs.Every day, take one action that moves you closer to your dream, your real purpose. No matter how small you believe the action to be, take one small step towards your dream every day. Do it first thing in the morning if you can, but if not, hustle at night if you have to.I can tell you from experience this recipe works. It will rid you of your negativity. It will help rid you of many of your self-limiting beliefs. It will cure you of many of your fears, including some you didn’t realize that you had.last_img read more

RS polls Hry: Sketch pen was provided to mark votes, says RO

first_imgChandigarh, Jun 13 (PTI) Haryana Vidhan Sabha Secretary and Returning Officer for the recently-held Rajya Sabha polls for the two seats in the state today said a sketch pen had been provided to the legislators to mark their votes and the entire process was videographed.Returning Officer R K Nandal said the results were declared late in the night on Saturday after due permission from the Election Commission.Notably, Congress today approached the Election Commission to demand countermanding of the election to both Rajya Sabha seats from Haryana, alleging a “conspiracy” by BJP-RSS that led to the defeat of a candidate, backed by the party and the main opposition INLD, under controversial circumstances. The INLD also shot off a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner today, saying the party is convinced that the matter calls for a thorough inquiry and it is in the interest of democracy to get to the bottom of the truth.Nandal said that the polling and counting of votes had been videographed.”On part of the Assembly and Assembly Secretariat the videography was done. The results were declared with due permission of the Election Commission,” Nandal told PTI. He said in addition to the staff of the Assembly secretariat, officials from the Election Commission were also present in the room where polling was taking place in one corner. “Haryanas Chief Electoral Officer was the lead observer. Besides, Additional CEO from the state was also present along with him right from 8 AM to 11 PM on Saturday,” he said. Asked to comment on allegations being made by opposition parties that someone had changed the original pen provided by the election officials with another one for a while which resulted in some votes being declared as invalid, Nandal said, “I cannot comment on what political parties or individual MLAs are saying.” At the same time, he said, “We had arranged a pen, which was tied to a thread. It was a sketch pen with violet ink, with which all 90 MLAs were supposed to mark their voting preference. We had also written a letter to all 90 MLAs on June 8 explaining in detail the instructions on how to vote. They were told that they could mark their votes with this pen only”.advertisementNandal also said that members were registering their vote in one corner where the pen had been kept tied to a thread. “I cannot comment on allegations that somebody changed the pen. This is not for me to comment. The MLAs could register their votes in one corner, and no one could go there expect those marking their votes,” he said. (MORE) PTI SUN KND SK KNDlast_img read more

Hamilton Wins British GP, Vindicates Decision for Two-Day Holiday to Greece

first_imgSILVERSTONE, England (AP) — Lewis Hamilton slashed Sebastian Vettel’s Formula One championship lead to one point by winning a record-equaling fifth British Grand Prix on Sunday as his title rival was left reeling by a late puncture.Vettel was in third heading into the penultimate lap at Silverstone only to see his front left tire shred — immediately after Ferrari teammate Kimi Raikkonen’s car experienced the same fate.Raikkonen still made the podium by replacing Vettel in third, but the championship leader fell back to seventh as the 25-point lead he held over Hamilton going into the 10th round of the 20-race season was all but wiped out on an overcast afternoon in central England. It capped a dominant weekend for Hamilton in front of his home fans and the three-time world champion was assisted by Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas making up seven places to join him on the podium after finishing second.“Great drive by Valtteri,” Hamilton said over the team radio after claiming victory. “Fantastic job, all weekend.”For Hamilton, the victory after failing to make the podium in his last two races will vindicate the decision to embark on a two-day holiday to Greece after last weekend’s Austrian GP.
