Ex-mentor: I urged Gueye to stay calm at Evertonby Paul Vegas24 days agoSend to a friendShare the loveA former mentor of PSG midfielder Idrissa Gueye says he was in contact when Everton blocked his move in January.Jimmy Adjovi-Boco, the founder of the Diambars Institute in Senegal, was one of Gueye’s junior mentors. He recalled: “I was often in touch with him at that moment – because I felt the big disappointment coming, I had to be there to discuss with him, to advise him, to reassure him that it was only part of the process. “It is said that the train never runs twice, but I was convinced that he was doing too well so that it would not happen one day or another. What happened this winter has reinforced the desire to work together on both sides.” About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your say

Credit: Courtesy of Mark Karman.Imagine being an Ohio State fan thousands of miles away from Columbus while deployed and stationed on a military base. Now imagine your deployment is during the biggest college football rivalry game of the year. What do you do? How do you manage to watch the game? Who do you watch it with? For some military members affiliated with Ohio State, this scenario is all too real. Yet, those members of the armed forces are resilient in their effort to watch their beloved Buckeyes take on Michigan. From watch parties to finding Ohio State sports bars in foreign cities, the strategies of finding a way to watch the biggest game in college football seemingly never end while overseas.Ohio State self-defense instructor and lieutenant colonel Mark Karman’s experience watching the game differed depending where he was located, but the process of finding Buckeye and Wolverine fans was always the same.“You knew who was from Michigan because it would come out naturally,” Karman said.During his deployment in Africa and Iraq, Karman said he needed people to pick up his watch shifts in order to see the game. He also said watch parties often formed among Ohio State and Michigan military members. There was always some sort of food set-up, like chips and dip or other leftovers scrounged up from dinner before the game started. Each team’s fans would watch in a separate room, just close enough where they could hear the other group cheering and yelling. When Karman was stationed in South Korea, the experience vastly differed. On the night of the game, he and other Buckeye fans in his squadron were led into town to watch the game at a local bar. As they entered the bar, it didn’t take long to realize this bar was unlike any other in South Korea. Hundreds of Ohio State fans packed the small sports bar, anxiously waiting for kickoff at 2 a.m. Korea Standard Time. Karman said it was unlike anything he had seen before overseas, and the atmosphere was “electric.” When asked if the time zone difference played a factor, Karman shrugged it off and said that those determined to watch the game found a way no matter the time zone. The game was always watchable via the Armed Forces Network (AFN), a service network that offers ESPN and other channels streamed to troops anywhere. Ohio State strength and conditioning instructor and retired staff sergeant Jason Sturgill remembered dedicating the entire month of November to the Ohio State-Michigan rivalry during his time stationed at Guantanamo Bay for the military police. Sturgill said his military unit was from Ohio and there were always a few units from Michigan that made their presence known. From flying flags outside tents to repping school colors while off-duty, everyone on base knew who was from Ohio and who was from Michigan. Though he was not able to watch the game, Sturgill said his unit would usually watch the game from inside this huge tent on base that would fit between 500 and 1,000 people. On the day of the game, the tent was filled with both Ohio State and Michigan fans. Sometimes the rowdiness of the fans forced the game to be viewed in separate tents. Sturgill said his time at Guantanamo Bay was filled with small pranks and bets between the schools’ followers. He recalled how the flags of each school often flew over their respective tents leading up to the game.“We would steal [Michigan’s] flag the night before, and give it back the next day,” Sturgill said. One popular bet among the two groups was that the losing school’s unit would fly the winning school’s flag after the game.Sturgill also said another bet from the Michigan units was a push-up wager. The unit supporting the losing team would have to do the same amount of push-ups the winning team scored during the game.“So if Michigan scored 48 points on us and won, the Ohio guys had to do 48 push-ups,” Sturgill said.Karman and Sturgill said the overall tone of the rivalry overseas between the two schools was a friendly rivalry. They stressed how, even though there was animosity between the schools, everyone stationed overseas was there for the same reason: to serve and protect the United States and the rest of the world. Of course the rivalry can get intense at times, but sometimes fans have to take a step back from the feud in order to accomplish something greater. Ohio State fans usually don’t give a damn for the whole state of Michigan, but they sure do give a damn about the whole military and its time and sacrifice.
AS Monaco have announced the signing of midfielder Aleksandr Golovin from CSKA Moscow in a €30m dealThe Russia international impressed at the World Cup this summer and proved to be an important member of the side that reached the quarter-finals of the competition for the first time in 48 years.Golovin has been linked with a move to Chelsea over the past couple of months, but he has instead opted for the French Riviera with Monaco vice-president Vadim Vasilyev suggesting that they could offer the 22-year-old something their rivals could not – regular playing time.“Monaco and CSKA this afternoon finally agreed on the transfer of Golovin,” said Vasilyev, according to Metro.“They really were complicated. State revenue projections do not reflect the governor’s proposed budget, according to the board. The district faces a loss of more than $22 million if the governor’s proposed budget passes. State of Alaska revenue projections for FY20 is based on the BSA of $5,930 of the State of Alaska Foundation Funding Formula. This is the same BSA amount used by the state for the FY17, FY18 and FY19 budget years, according to documents provided by the school board. State revenues include $79,009,719 for Foundation Funding, $287,358 for Quality Schools funding, and $2,100,012 One-time funding for a total of $81,397,089. Lastly, the budget requests maximum funding from the borough. KPBSD Communications Liaison Pegge Erkeneff: “The School Board has been meeting and on April 1 when we need to pass a budget we’ll be putting forth a budget that is fully funded, like the legislature last year put into law. We will request full funding from the borough, and going forward with full funding in our budget. A million dollars is 10 teachers, so that is a lot of money, that’s 10 lives in our community.” According to Jones the budget is based on status quo flat funding from the state using the base student allocation, and also includes last year’s one-time funding appropriated by the state Legislature. Kenai Peninsula Borough Mayor Charlie Pierce told district officials in a Facebook live event earlier this month that they needed to ’embrace upcoming changes’: “The truth of the matter is for the educators out there, it’s simple math. You’re going to take a $20 million dollar hit from the state, we’re (the borough) going to take about a $20 million dollar hit from the state, that’s $40 million dollars. There is no way that we can fund you to the cap, and even if we did it’s not going to make a real big difference, you’re going to take a $20 million dollar hit. The Kenai Peninsula School District will look different next year.” Facebook0TwitterEmailPrintFriendly分享The Kenai Peninsula Borough School Board has released the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District’s preliminary FY20 budget. KPBSD Assistant Superintendent Dave Jones made the announcement at a Board of Education meeting on Thursday. Written in the budget documents: “Administration has, for demonstrative purposes, budgeted KPB support in the amount of $52,537,091. This budgeted KPB revenue amount is the projected maximum allowable local contribution for FY20. If maximum allowable funding is received, it will provide needed funding for the student social emotional support plan, continued support of existing programs, and increased costs associated with collective bargaining.” The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District will present their budget proposal to the School Board at their next meeting on April 1.
Firefighters mopped up and held fire line from Sterling Highway to Skilak Loop Road and Hidden Lake to the Kenai River. Mop up operations continued around Trout, Juneau and Romig cabins. A Wildfire Use Module (specialized firefighting crew) worked on improvements in the vicinity of the Russian Lake area. Due to the holiday weekend drivers saw some delays along the Seward Highway. Pilot car operations were in place on both sides of the highway and will remain in place on Tuesday. Expect delays from 45 minutes up to several hours. The structure group in the Cooper Landing area continues to prep structures on the south end; and reduce fuel loading around structures by using chippers and a masticator. Firefighters are installing hose lays and sprinklers along the Fuller Lake trail to cool down heat. Firefighters cut out blown down trees and built fire line in the Surprise Creek area along the southern edge. Helicopter bucket work was accomplished northeast of Hidden Lake campground and south of the Trout Lake area. A return to normal temperatures over the next few days and relative humidity may increase fire activity, according to the Incident Command Team. WILMINGTON, MA — Wilmington Apple recently caught up with Wilmington Police Chief Joe Desmond, who was appointed to the position on Monday, July 15. Question #1: You grew up in Wilmington. You’ve been on the force for more than 30 years. Can you describe what it’s like to now be Chief?Chief: “It’s been quite a journey. I started July 2 of 1988. It doesn’t seem so long ago as things do move quickly. I never envisioned myself becoming chief. I was never one of those people who had an ambition to be the leader of the department. I always wanted to be involved and extend my responsibilities as best I could, but I never saw myself here. It’s an honor and I’m looking forward to it.”Question #2: You told the Town Crier: “We’ve always had a department that has had a very good reputation in the community and that’s responsive to the community’s needs.” How do you plan on continuing to maintain this reputation and responsiveness? Will the public see any noticeable changes now with you at the helm?Chief: “Being responsive to the community’s needs is one of the most important things that we can do. I try to stress to [my staff] that our reputation doesn’t happen by accident. You get a good reputation by being responsive to the community’s needs and being professional. My goal is to keep that going and improve on it in any area that we can.”“I don’t think you’ll see any major changes right away. The best, longest lasting change you can make is change that happens slowly. Our biggest priority right now is staffing issues with Deputy Chief Richter going to Kittery and the Chief Begonis going to the private sector. We had two retirements last year and two more coming up, so the amount of time it takes to hire people, train them at the academy and get them road trained and ready to go is a big turnaround. One of my biggest issues will be getting up to staffing levels. Once you get there, you can begin to broaden out a bit.”Question #3: What are your thoughts on the new Police Explorers Program your department is starting? Chief: “One of the ways we always look to improve is outreach to the community. We’re a reactive profession in a way. We wait until someone calls us and then come and try to solve their problem. We’re looking for ways to be proactive. We think the Explorers program is a nice way of doing that. Officers Dan Furbush and Mike Cabral are spearheading this. We hope to be starting in October. We’ve got some good early feedback. They’re looking for 20 participants. We’re looking forward to it. It’s a way of making the younger generation have a positive response to this profession. For some reason, we’re not getting the type and number of recruits we used to get. Not as many people are taking the civil service test. For whatever reason, this job doesn’t have the appeal that it used to have. A program like this can be almost like a farm system, where we instill that this is a good profession. We hope some of these kids who participate will grow up and someday join our ranks.”Question #4: Your department is holding its National Night Out event at Rotary Park this coming Tuesday, August 6. What are your thoughts on the event and what are you trying to accomplish with it? Chief: “I agree with [former Chief Begonis] that National Night Out is one of the best nights of the year for the department and I want to carry on what he did with it. Because of the Cummings Foundation’s generosity, we were able to hold the event, although most of what you see is volunteers. All the agencies are doing this on their own free time. Red Heat Tavern donates all the food. The evening provides a relaxed atmosphere where citizens can come out and meet people in law enforcement in a nice setting, not a stressful setting or in positions of authority. There’s also an educational aspect to it too — citizens can learn more about what we do. And, for those wondering, yes, we have the helicopter back for this year’s event, weather-permitting, which is always a crowd favorite.”Question #5: Lt. Brian Pupa was recently appointed Deputy Chief of Police. What are your thoughts on his promotion? Chief: “Once I was promoted to permanent chief, the issue of filling the deputy chief came up. The two candidates at the top of the list were Lt. Dan Murray and Lt. Brian Pupa. There was no way I could lose. I’m very much looking forward to working with Brian. His civil service rank is Deputy Chief, but I really want to view this as Chief and Chief 1A. I have that much confidence in him and value and trust his opinion that much. It’s going to be great and I’m excited about it.”Look for 5 more questions with Chief Desmond tomorrow on Wilmington Apple.Like Wilmington Apple on Facebook. Follow Wilmington Apple on Twitter. The content is provided for information purposes only. Ever since hard drives were invented, scientists have been hard at work trying to figure out ways to make them smaller while at the same time developing ways to make them more dense so that they can hold more information. As the team at IBM notes, currently, it takes approximately 100,000 atoms to hold a single bit of information. If a technique could be found to commercialize their single-atom approach, they further note, it would allow for holding something as massive as Apple’s iTunes library of songs on something as small as a credit card.To create their tiny magnet, the team used a scanning tunneling microscope to manipulate holmium atoms placed on a magnesium oxide plate (to keep the magnetic poles stable). Applying an electric current to the microscope’s probe allowed for changing the magnetic orientation of the atom between two states, which, the team notes, could be used to represent on/off states for a single bit of data. To read the state, the team measured the magnetic current passing through the atom. The team notes also that the state of several atoms could be read or written when the atoms were as close as a single nanometer apart.IBM has been investing heavily in scanning tunneling microscope research for decades, a technology they have been credited with inventing (Gerd Binnig and Heinrich Rohrer won the Nobel Prize in physics for this accomplishment back in 1986). Recently, they also announced that they had developed a new technique that offered a better way to measure the magnetic field of individual atoms and in a somewhat related development, also announced that they would be offering the world’s first commercial “universal” quantum-computing service. Nation’s Largest Hispanic Journalist Group Drops… Gary Hershorn by NPR News Richard Gonzales 8.23.19 7:48am The nation’s largest organization of Hispanic journalists is cutting its ties with Fox News over what the group says is the network’s spreading of misinformation about unauthorized immigrants, and by extension Hispanics. The move will cost the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) some money since Fox was signed up to be a sponsor of their upcoming conference. The journalists’ group published a letter to its members Thursday saying it will return to Fox News more than $16,000 donated by the network to sponsor its upcoming conference in San Antonio, Texas.”To accept financial support from an entity that perpetuates the spread of disinformation to the public about the Hispanic and Latino community risks the integrity and credibility of NAHJ’s 35 year mission,” Hugo Balta, the association’s president wrote.Balta, a senior producer at MSNBC, said his group has been in contact with Fox’s management to complain about what he and others consider to be anti-immigrant rhetoric, like when pundits on the conservative network talk about “an invasion” of the U.S. by migrants from Mexico and Central America. He said those concerns were met with expressions of “regret” and nothing more.A recent remark made by Fox News radio host Todd Starnes prompted Balta to say enough is enough.”Starnes likened migrants coming to the United States to Nazi Germany invading western Europe. That’s the straw that broke the camel’s back for me and NAHJ,” he said in an interview with NPR.Balta said Starnes’ comments came less than two weeks after the mass shooting in El Paso, where a gunman killed 22 people after publishing a manifesto citing a “Hispanic invasion of Texas.”Fox has become a megaphone for disinformation, Balta said.”There’s something wrong at Fox News and the reason why it’s rampant is because there are no consequences,” he added.Marsheila Hayes, Fox News’s vice president of diversity and inclusion, said in a statement “it is unfortunate that NAHJ has chosen to exclude Fox News from their upcoming convention.””As the leading news network in the country, we are committed to fostering a diverse and collaborative workplace environment, and have been recognized in the industry for our advancement in this area,” she added.Copyright 2019 NPR. Categories: Farrington News 02Jul Farrington announces road project in Utica An important road improvement project for Utica will begin soon thanks to additional funding set aside by the Michigan Legislature, announced state Rep. Jeff Farrington.Farrington, R-Utica, said the project makes necessary and needed repairs to Auburn Road from M-59 to the Utica city line.“Residents of our community reached out to me about the importance of prioritizing roads, and I have been working to ensure the project at Auburn Road becomes a reality,” Farrington said. “It is exciting to announce that Auburn Road will receive these necessary repairs and improve the commute for local families.”Farrington said many local residents reached out about fixing Auburn Road, and he fought hard to ensure that their voices were heard. In addition to the Auburn Road project, there are another five projects totaling nearly $4.5 million that repair or fix roads in Macomb County.“However, Michigan’s roads and bridges were neglected for too long, and we need to continue to work on a plan that will result in a long-lasting, permanent solution for Michigan’s roads,” Farrington said. “I will continue to meet with local residents to receive input so I can bring a plan that focuses on fairness, efficiency and quality back to Lansing.”For the fiscal year 2014 budget, the Michigan Legislature created a special fund using $230 million in existing state revenue, half of which was appropriated on Oct 1. with the rest now being appropriated.###
