Google Doodle pays tribute to Japanese inventor Seiichi Miyake

first_img Online Wellness Smart City Google When Seiichi Miyake found out a close friend was losing the ability to see clearly, he wanted to help. That desire led to an entirely new way for the visually impaired to navigate big cities, railways and parks. In 1965, Miyake invented the tactile paving slab (or “tenji block” in Japan) with his own money. Monday’s Google Doodle celebrates the introduction of the block 52 years ago.The doodle from March 18, 2019. Google The tenji blocks were first installed in the Japanese city of Okayama on March 18, 1967, next to a school for the blind, and they would go on to revolutionize the way the visually impaired interact with the world, making it safer and easier to get around public spaces independently.Miyake’s original design, which was installed in all Japan Railway platforms in the 1970s and rapidly found its way to cities across the globe, featured two tactile patterns that people with visual impairments can detect with a cane or through their feet — providing cues on which way they should head.Subway tracks in New York with the yellow tenji tiles.Subway tracks in New York with the yellow tenji tiles. Keith Getter/Getty Images One pattern features a series of raised lines that indicate “forward”. The second design is commonly referred to as the “truncated domes” pattern, a series of small bumps that act as a “stop” sign — typically at the edge of a train platform or before a motorway.A number of different patterns have been designed since, with smaller raised dots or more pill-shaped bumps signifying different directional cues. For instance, when the raised lines are horizontal in the direction of travel, that might mean “look out for steps ahead”. All of those cues, which many may not even notice as they wander through a city, are incredibly important for those with limited vision. 4:33 Share your voice Comments Now playing: Watch this: Google Doodle Google 49 Photos Tags Microsoft tech teaches children who are blind how to… Our favorite Google Doodles through the years 23last_img read more

Regular price: $150.See it at AmazonPhotoshop Elements is like the junior version of Photoshop, the 800-pound gorilla of image editors. It’s designed to help you organize, manage, fix, enhance and share your photos. Now, I’m the first to point out that you can accomplish Photoshop-level image editing with free tools like Gimp and Paint.NET. Those programs have fairly steep learning curves, however. They’re not what I would call consumer-friendly. Photoshop Elements has a learning curve, too, but it’s definitely more guided, more intuitive. As for Premiere Elements, it’s a pretty powerful consumer-level video editor. With it you can import clips from just about any source and turn your footage into a polished, professional-looking movie.  There are some negative reviews from Amazon buyers, but look closely: Most of those came from folks who didn’t follow the license-redemption instructions properly — or thought they were buying Photoshop proper.Get a $100 iTunes gift card for $85Do you spend a lot on iTunes? Read our full Nest Hello review to learn why.As is common (unfortunately) with many smart doorbells, this one requires a monthly subscription to really get the most from it. Although Nest stores a three-hour video history at no extra charge, it’s probably a good idea to get Nest Aware, which for $5 per month stores a five-day video history. That subscription also nets you extras like activity zones (which let you limit motion detection to, say, just the porch area, so you don’t get a bunch of alerts every time a car drives by) and person and facial recognition. For what it’s worth, I’m currently testing a less expensive video doorbell that’s similar in design and offers free cloud storage, but it’s nowhere near as versatile as the Nest Hello. The latter is not only CNET’s top pick, but also a top-rated choice among users: Everywhere I look, I see average ratings of anywhere from 4.6 stars to 5 stars. (Seriously, check out Lowe’s: 5.0 average from over 2,300 buyers!)Assuming you’re going to end up paying some kind of monthly fee for cloud storage and whatnot, you might as well get the best deal you can on the hardware. Destination France event highlights countrys challenges – and beautiful inspirations

first_img Friday, March 1, 2019 Destination France event highlights country’s challenges – and beautiful inspirations Posted by MONTREAL — France continues to fascinate thanks to its exceptional history. This was the theme chosen by Atout France, France’s tourism development agency in Canada, for its seventh ‘Destination France’ travel industry roadshow.“The choice of the theme of our tour, France Stories, was for Atout France the opportunity to draw the attention of the press and professionals to the huge heritage offering in France and overseas regions,” Marie-Andrée Boucher, Atout France’s head of press relations, told Travelweek’s sister publication Profession Voyages at the Montreal show recently.Destination France 2019 brought together 27 French partners to present their tourist regions and products to Canadian professionals. The event, which began in Montreal, continued in Toronto before landing in Calgary and Vancouver.Agents turned out to the shows in droves looking for new products for their clients.Melanie Paul-Hus, Director, Atout France Canada“The aim of this tour is to show the novelties of France and connect tour operators and travel consultants with representatives of French destinations and their tourist products. We are happy to have such a beautiful delegation,” said Melanie Paul-Hus, Atout France’s Canada Director.More news:  GLP Worldwide introduces first-ever Wellness programsFrance, however, faces significant hurdles, not least of which are the recent ‘Yellow Vest’ protest demonstrations and the widespread media coverage. “I think that the news brings challenges,” says Paul-Hus. “At present, we do not know if social movements have had an impact on the motivations of Canadian travellers, but we are confident. All cities are well organized to welcome tourists in the best conditions, despite the events.Paul-Hus says France is also working to promote ‘slow tourism’ in France, to help combat overtourism. “We know that travelers will stop in Paris, but it is not a final and unique destination. Many offers are located less than two hours from Paris. The Val de Loire region, in the spotlight this year, is a good example. It is rare that one visits a single city in France, the distances being so short. Although France is very popular in Quebec, we still have a lot of conquests to make about Ontario and other English-speaking provinces.”Marc Richet, director of the regional tourism committee of France’s Centre-Val de Loire regionCentre-Val de Loire echoes this desire to live and relive history, and this year the region is in the spotlight with ‘Viva Leonardo da Vinci! 2019 – 500 years of Renaissance in Center Val de Loire’.More news:  Canada raises travel warning amid escalating protests in Hong Kong“It’s going to be a permanent party all year long,” says Marc Richet, General Manager of the Regional Tourism Committee of Center-Val de Loire. “There will be many cultural events for all ages because the culture is not reserved for seniors. Our heritage is more dynamic than ever with the use of new technologies. If you have to go to the area, this year is a great opportunity.”“With France, you have to know how to reinvent yourself,” says Cristelle Cormier, deputy director of Tours Chanteclerc. The Destination France event was also an opportunity to reward Canadian tour operators who showcase France in their brochures.
