first_img Day 1 Results Story Links WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Drake University men’s golf team continued its strong play on the first day of the Golden Horseshoe Intercollegiate at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Course.Drake carded an opening-round 295 to sit at 11-over par and one stroke behind the leader, No. 43 Campbell.”Overall, I was very pleased with how we played today,” said Drake head coach Matt Lewis. “It is a demanding course and I thought we managed our games well.”Drake senior Tommi Avant paced the Bulldogs and the leaderboard with a 3-under par 68 that featured a pair of eagles to lead all golfers. “Tommi played awesome today,” Lewis said. “His two eagles definitely helped and Lucas was solid too as they lead us today.”Scherf sits tied for 11th after the first round with a 2-over par 73 while Tim Lim carded a 76.Kyle MacDonald completed the Bulldogs scoring with a 78 as did Chase Wicklund. Action in the three-day event continues Monday on the 6,817-yard course as the Bulldog look to remain on top of the leaderboard. “We will have the same mindset for tomorrow and look forward to the challenge,” Lewis said. Print Friendly Versionlast_img
